Keynotes:
MedicalPlanQuotes
We’ve been using Walt Hollis for our startup’s medical insurance, and he’s fantastic. He really knows his stuff. Walt has been in the medical insurance industry for 23 years, 12 of those years as an executive with Anthem Blue Cross and Kaiser Permanente, and for the last 11 years he has run his own agency and launched www.medicalplanquotes.com.
He represents all of the major carriers in California and specializes in small business and personal plans. He has close to 500 small business clients and over 1,000 clients with personal plans. And the best thing about Walt is that he responds to your questions the same day. No waiting around.

Ansca Mobile’s Corona SDK
LavaMind, which owns Founders Space, is now using Ansca Mobile’s Corona SDK to create our mobile apps. After a lot of research and testing, we chose Corona because it’s simple and powerful.
Ansca Mobile’s Corona SDK is a mobile development framework used for creating native, graphically rich and connected applications for the iPhone, iPad, and Android platforms. Developers use the easy-to-learn Lua language and take advantage of Corona SDK’s APIs to quickly build applications and add advanced functionality, like physics, in just a few lines of code. Corona SDK’s architecture — Lua on top of OpenGL — is very similar to platforms used to develop games from companies like ngmoco and Rovio and delivers very high-performance.
Using an eBook to Build Your Brand
by Karen Leland at www.karenleland.com
By now almost everyone has heard of Amanda Hocking, the 26-year-old novelist who was rejected by dozens of New York publishing houses. Not one to give up, Hocking decided to go the entrepreneurial route and self published an eBook instead.
The results? She’s made more than US$1 million dollars to date and just sold the movie rights to one of her popular series. Oh and she also just penned a US$2 million deal for a four book series – with an old fashioned publishing house.

WebFaction
Startups keep asking us who provides the best web hosting. Well, there’s no single answer to this because there are so many things to consider: bandwidth costs, storage costs, server speeds, location, backup, reliability, scalability, flexibility, and the list goes on.
That said, we are now using WebFaction for some of our high bandwidth sites, and they are extremely good in many respects:
* Their pricing is super affordable — see for yourself
* They have a reputation for being very reliable
* Their customer support is fantastic!
Kindisoft’s secureSWF
For the past 2 weeks, I’ve been looking into how to protect Flash & Flex files. Most Flash & Flex files can be decompiled, revealing the source code to anyone who makes the effort to do so. Unfortunately, it doesn’t require a great deal of effort to download one of the many decompilers available online and rip off someone else’s hard work.
I did a lot of research looking for a solution, and most of the SWF protection packages out there don’t actually deliver what they promise. They are simply too easy to outsmart. However, after scouring many technical forums and developer sites, I found that a large number of developers are using secureSWF.

Mad Mimi Email Marketing
We love Mad Mimi — and not just because we have an Aunt Mimi, who back in the 70s looked just like their cartoon mascot — but because it’s a great service. If you’re going to be sending out newsletters or doing any sort of email marketing, Mad Mimi makes it a whole lot easier. Their system for designing email templates is simple and elegant. It’s as easy as dragging and dropping in photos and artwork. And the results are much better than you’d get with a typical email marketing service. Their pricing is also really good. In fact, you can try Mad Mimi for free. If you haven’t noticed, we’re using Mad Mimi for all of our newsletters and updates.
Pair Networks Hosting
Pair Networks provides all the hosting for Founders Space. The reason we chose Pair Networks is that I have been using them for over 10 years on various projects, and I’ve found them incredibly reliable. They also provide excellent customer support, and unlike so many other hosting providers, you can talk to a real live tech support person on the phone. I can’t tell you what a difference this makes when you need it. If you value uptime and want a hosting provider that actually responds quickly to your questions, I recommend Pair Network.

Ask the VC
Ask the VC is similar in concept to Founders Space, except that, instead of tapping into a broad network of advisors, the answers are provided by two individuals: Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson. Basically, you ask them questions, and they provide answers from a VC’s perspective. The thing that makes this site work is that they are two smart venture capitalists. Jason is not only a VC, but also a lawyer, so Ask the VC includes legal advice too. We see this as a good resource for founders.
Background on Brad & Jason:
FeldThoughts
FeldThoughts is a nice blog for founders. It lets you into the mind of Brad Feld, a thoughtful VC. Brad likes early stage tech companies, and his blog offers some good insights and helpful advice to entrepreneurs.
Brad’s Background:
Brad has been an early stage investor and entrepreneur for over 20 years. Prior to co-founding Foundry Group, he co-founded Mobius Venture Capital and, prior to that, founded Intensity Ventures, a company that helped launch and operate software companies and later became a venture affiliate of the predecessor to Mobius Venture Capital.
Venture Hacks
I really get a kick out of Venture Hacks. They have attitude, and they give great advice to startups seeking venture funding.
Venture Hacks is the product of Nivi (bio) and Naval (bio), two self-proclaimed students of life, and their mission is to share the best startup advice they’ve got.
These guys are for real. They are very connected, and they have founded companies like Epinions; invested $20M in companies like Twitter; helped start companies backed by Sequoia, Benchmark, Kleiner Perkins, and Atlas; and advised many others.
The best part of Venture Hacks is their Angel List. It’s well stocked with A-list angels and nicely organized.
