Carolyn Miller

Carolyn Handler Miller is one of the pioneering writers and content creators in the field of interactive media. She has contributed to over four-dozen projects as a writer, writer-story designer, and consultant, including webisodes, virtual worlds, video games, interactive educational titles, smart toys and transmedia entertainment.
She is the author of a groundbreaking book, Digital Storytelling: A Creator’s Guide to Interactive Entertainment (Focal Press, 2008), now in its second edition. The book draws upon her first-hand experiences working in new media, plus numerous interviews and case studies. She is also a contributing author of Write Your Way into Animation and Games (Focal Press, 2010).
Initially beginning her career as a newspaper reporter and magazine journalist, Carolyn’s work spans writing for TV, feature films and books as well as interactive media. She’s currently working on a virtual world project for preteen and teenage girls in the Middle East, creating a cast of characters and five interactive stories for it.
Carolyn has been a frequent presenter-lecturer at national and international conferences and at universities, including the Maui Writers’ Conference in Hawaii, the Internet/Digital Television Summit in Paris and the African Broadcasting Network’s Screenwriting Lab in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Carolyn has also taught courses in interactive narrative and video game development for the University of New Mexico and De Montfort University in the UK, and continues to work on a variety of interactive projects for national and international clients. In addition, she was appointed by Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico to be on his Governor’s Council on Film and Media Industries, and she serves as a member of the Council’s new Digital Media Working Group.
A native of San Francisco, California, Carolyn now divides her time between Santa Fe and Los Angeles. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from Cornell University and an M.S. in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
