Can you give me technical advice on building my prototype?

QUESTION:

I have a technology question. While I have been in software for 10+ years, my programming skills have left me. I am looking to build a working prototype of a web site idea I have. A core component is to pass registration data collected on my site, to multiple existing sites (essentially a SSO process for registration as well as login). The second part would be to populate my site with catalogue data from the multiple sites I registered the user for. Could someone recommend any automation, canned scripts, widgets etc. to expedite this prototype process? I cannot afford to pay a developer at this stage. Thanks for the help.

I would suggest going with Drupal. It has a more a more active user base, which means that it will mature faster than Joomla since more people are contributing code for the project. Additionally, Drupal is also known for being more secure than Joomla, and, if there are any new vulnerabilities found, they will probably be fixed faster, again, due to the larger user base.

I'd go for Joomla or Drupal. They have a zillion canned scripts and plug-ins that you can use to do all sorts of things. It will save you tons of time. Joomla is a heck of a lot easier to learn than Drupal, but not quite as powerful. I believe JanRain has SSO plug-ins for both of those platforms!

    Here are a couple possibilities:

    1) You should check out DeveloperForce http://wiki.developerforce.com/index.php/How_to

    2) Check out Jarian http://www.janrain.com/

I'm not sure if these are exactly what you're looking for, but Jarian seems to be taking off and quite useful.
