A Lesson from Uber’s Ugly Side

Benchmark, one Silicon Valley’s top venture capital firms, is suing Uber’s founder and former CEO, Travis Kalanick, claiming fraud and other transgressions.

As evidenced by the recent spate of stories, Kalanick was grossly irresponsible and tended towards cutthroat business tactics. My belief is that what goes around comes around. Kalanick acted unethically, and now he’s paying the price.

I always tell startup founders not to cross the line. It’s good to be aggressive. It’s good to push the limits. But don’t do anything illegal or unethical. That’s crossing the line.

How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid

how to get filthy rich in rising asia

Review: How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid is a clever book. It’s written like self-help book, but it’s actually a novel. It takes place in some unknown Southeast Asian country, where two young people are struggling to rise up the social ladder and make their fortunes. The world is a harsh place, and this book doesn’t paint a pretty picture. It’s brutally honest.

The story captivated me right up until the end, where it falls short. I won’t give away the ending, but it’s doesn’t live up to the rest of the book, which is well-written and original in style and substance. Read More...

DNA Editing & Neo-Sapiens

Is DNA editing going to make homo sapiens obsolete? I think the answer is YES!

Scientists in the United States have just edited the DNA of human embryos to erase a heritable heart condition. This opens the doors to a new era in medicine and a lot of controversy. If we can do this, we can start remaking our species.

This is what I’ve been talking about: healthier, smarter, stronger children. Get ready for a wild ride into a future of neo-sapiens!

Beware of ICOs

Don’t buy the ICO hype! An ICO is an initial coin offering that blockchain startups are using to fund their growth. The problem is that virtual coins are extremely risky investments. This year, ICOs have raised over $500 million in the US and more in China. Speculators can drive up prices by 1000x in a single month.

It’s sheer madness that anyone would buy these virtual tokens issued by unproven startups whose products may not even be successful. It’s a bubble waiting to burst. It’s worse than the 17th century tulip mania, where a single tulip could sell for more than a home.

You might as well go to Las Vegas and play roulette. The odds are better. Eventually, the government will step in and shut many of the startups down, rendering their currencies worthless. Until then, gamble at your own risk.
