Not fun to think about, is it? And knowing what not to do (and why) is just as important if not more important than what to do.
There is some amazing insight available on why some start-ups thrive. One of my recent favorites (though the article is not recent) is an article written by Marc Andreessen about what is most important for a start-up – people, product or market. What I want to share here is some of my experience around working for companies/start-ups that succeeded and those that failed. And in particular I want to cover one of the key strategic flaws that was the cause of a company’s ultimate demise.
Imagine answering email, tweeting, checking Facebook, and updating your website, all while bicycling! Sound crazy? Not really, I’m doing it right now as I write this article. And I’m losing weight with each sentence typed. The folks at FitDesk have come up with this cool bike that any geek, like me, would lust over.
I have to admit, I love this gadget. I seldom have enough time to exercise. Now I can exercise while I work. Then after work, I can go out and eat enough pizza to make up for all that lost weight. Only kidding! I prefer sushi. Cuisine aside, this product is really well made. It’s produced by a startup in Antioch, Tennessee. Even though they aren’t in Silicon Valley, it’s clear they had geeks like us in mind. Every founder should own one of these — if only to reduce the stress of running a startup.
We love reviewing techno gadgets, and this time we’re focusing on the marvels of folding bikes.
As more startups sprout up, parking in the San Francisco Bay Area is becoming a nightmare and traffic is even worse. You can waste a lot of precious time in your car.
So how do you get to work without a car? BART? CalTrain? MUNI? Those are nice, but what if your office isn’t near a stop? Do you go for a long walk? Or try to catch a bus? Well, there’s an alterative. Why not bring your bike along? It’s not hard if the bike folds up into a neat little bundle that you slide right onto a train with.
